Flights of Fantasy Project - Ankou Illustration

Ankou illustration for monsters and mythical creatures project. The purpose of this project was to conduct research on a mythological beast and create my own interpretation of the creature using photo references and found imagery. I chose to portray the Ankou from Brittany mythology, which is a creature depicted as a human with a decaying face or body. According to the tales passed down from generations of Bretons, the Ankou is the first unfortunate soul to die in a community or village, and the last one to leave. The creature’s appearance was inspired by vintage ink illustrations, skeletons, and cowboys/western culture. My goal was to give the creature a creepy, Americana twist, which is reflected in its large hat, body silhouette, and western clothing.
